Inner Child

Day 5 of 6

Review & the Mother Wound

A reflective day. Before we open anything deeper, we stop and look back at how far you’ve already come — and there is usually a good deal more of it than you expect.

The feel of the day

Looking back before looking further

By Day 5 the group knows each other, and the morning has a warm, unhurried, kitchen-table quality to it. We share what’s shifted, we look at photographs of ourselves as children, and only then do we begin to touch the deeper work — gently, and always with something soothing to close it.

How the morning unfolds

Five gentle movements

  1. How do you feel, one to ten?

We start where we always start — with an honest number, no explanation required. It's a simple way of taking your own temperature before anything else begins.

  2. Back to the Jelly Bean Tree

We return to the picture you first met on Day 1. Most people find they choose a different bean this time, and seeing that shift for yourself is often the most moving moment of the day.

  3. What changes have you noticed?

Sharing time. What's different at home, in your sleep, in how you speak to yourself? We also revisit the homework — how can you help your inner child? — and dip into the Drama Quiz for a lighter look at the roles we all slip into.

  4. Childhood photographs

Bring a photo of yourself as a child. We look at them together, over tea and coffee, and talk about the little person in the picture. It is tender, funny and unexpectedly powerful — and nobody is ever made to share more than they want to.

  5. The Mother Wound — an introduction

Only an opening, held very carefully: a first gentle look at what we needed from our mothers and didn't always receive, followed by a meditation to settle everything back down. There's no digging and no pressure — just a door quietly unlocked.

To take home

A letter to your inner child

We finish by asking the question we began with — how do you feel now? — and then you go home with the loveliest piece of homework on the whole course: write a letter to your inner child. Take your time over it. We read from it, if you’d like to, on Day 6.

The Mother Wound gets a fuller course of its own in time. Here it is simply introduced, so that nothing lands too heavily and you leave the morning feeling steady.
